How does it work?
After answering a few simple questions your coach will review whether the Cogmed training is a good fit for you or your child. They will then schedule an initial consultation, which can be done face-to-face in their office or remotely via Telehealth, before beginning the program.
Cogmed’s working memory training for children is broken up into two programs: JM and RM.
Cogmed JM
Cogmed JM is suitable for younger children between the ages of 4 and 7, or those who may not be comfortable working with numbers or letters. This program was developed as a shorter, visuo-spatial only version of the standard Cogmed program. The exercises do not include verbal working memory tasks, and are comprised of 30 minute sessions with 15 minutes of active focus time. All Cogmed JM programs are limited to 25 blocks with a maximum of 3 sessions per week.
Participants in this protocol are rewarded for progress by earning more fish or other decorative items in a virtual fishtank.
Cogmed RM
Cogmed RM is geared toward older children or those who are more comfortable working with numbers and letters, approximately 7 and older. This program is made up of visuo-spatial & verbal working memory tasks with 12 exercises total. The complexity of the tasks and overall level of difficulty dynamically adapts to your child’s performance. For older children or those with increased attention spans, Cogmed RM can be customized to 25 fifty minute, 30 thirty-five minute, or 40 twenty-five minute training blocks depending on what works for you and your child.
Those in this program can measure their progress by taking part in Stan’s RoboRacing, a reward-tracking game. Here, their Cogmed robot “Stan” races against other robots on virtual tracks.
Regardless of which protocol you’re in, once a week you (the parent) and your coach will have a check-in to evaluate your child’s progress and answer any questions you may have. Your Cogmed Qualified Practitioner will be with you every step of the way. The Cogmed material can be accessed from home or anywhere else that has an internet-enabled computer, iPad, or Android tablet. This means it easily fits into your child’s schedule.
